The Veil is a Kharaa evolution structure unlocked by evolving a Shade Hive. It is an immobile seaweed-like organism with leathery flaps covering its stalk.

The Veil specializes in deceptive evolutions, known as Aura and Phantom, which are automatically unlocked when a Veil is created. The deceptive evolutions' power increases or decreases with each Veil for a maximum of three times. Deceptive evolutions can be purchased in the Evolve Menu, but only one deceptive evolution can be active at a time.

Most Kharaa structures absorb nutrients by rooting into the Infestation. If the Infestation recedes from underneath a Kharaa structure, it will take damage over time until death or the ground is infested again.

Most Kharaa structures will mature over time, gaining extra maximum Health and Armor every second until fully matured.
  • Max health/armor and mature time vary between different structures.
  • At 50% maturity, the structure is prefixed as "Grown".

Silences the lifeform at all times and camouflages it when still or slowly moving.
  • Each level gradually silences all sounds produced by the player.
    • Level 1: muffles footsteps
    • Level 2: muffles attack sounds
    • Level 3: complete silence
    • Babblers belonging to a Gorge with Phantom will always be silent.
  • Lifeform becomes 88% transparent when standing still or slowly moving.
    • Causes visible distortion when moving.
    • Uncloaks instantly after colliding with enemies, being attacked, using an ability, or moving quickly.
    • Camouflage delay applies after being attacked or using an ability.
    • Can use crouch (default key: Ctrl) to move slowly and stay camouflaged.
  • Camouflage is nullified by Observatory and Scan detection.
