Redo front page?

The front page looks messy as hell, and most of it isn't all too interesting or even relevant for most players visiting the wiki. Rather than dev tools and whole sections on the game's development it should have more gameplay-oriented things like a more prominent section for rookies, balance changes, lifeform and weapon links and suchforth. That is perhaps a good idea, the main page hasn't been touched since the Alpha days. However, instead of changing the main page gradually, please propose a sample design here: Main Page Revamp --PsiWarp (talk) 15:36, 8 July 2013 (CDT)

Update: I am applying the new design to the main page. It incorporates all previous main page links with additional gameplay content. Main Page Revamp will remain available for future changes (such as strategies, rookie guides, etc). Please feel free to translate for other languages as well!--PsiWarp (talk) 11:44, 12 August 2013 (CDT)

Main Page Disclaimer

Anyone know how to edit the box that says "early beta"?--PsiWarp 05:42, 1 November 2012 (UTC)

It's here: Template:Mainpage_notice. I changed it, but you can update it too. Quovatis 21:12, 1 November 2012 (UTC)
Ah thank you Quovatis! It is perfect as is :)--PsiWarp 23:21, 1 November 2012 (UTC)

Competitive Section

I didn't find one yet, and it was suggested in this thread: I think it's a good idea, and could also be used to provide contact information etc. Since tournaments are beginning, and more and more teams are forming, adding information about past tournaments, maybe with links to VODs, would also be nice. I think this should have it's own section on the front page. Any thoughts? --3del! 21:33, 13 September 2012 (UTC)

Agreed. Once the pages are done, it can be put on the front page. Quovatis 17:38, 14 September 2012 (UTC)
Is someone already working on it? If not, i could give it a try, but i'm new to this wiki, and have not so much experience with wikis in general. --3del! 12:37, 15 September 2012 (UTC)
Sounds like a great idea! I can help with editing and so forth, but what should the page name be (e.g. Competitive, Tournaments, etc)? It would be good to condense the information in one article until the need for more arises.--PsiWarp 22:00, 15 September 2012 (UTC)

Page Naming Conventions...

I'm thinking, if people want to upload information about their maps we should prefix pages with Map:

Daworm 01:19, 27 April 2011 (UTC)

Yes. We could also use some volunteers to make pages for Tram and Rockdown as well as a general map page. Quovatis 03:03, 27 April 2011 (UTC)
ns2_sample could perhaps be used as a template for this (should be moved into this new section). We might need a new page called "maps", which is then linked from the Mapping page. The maps page itself could be a category page with the alphabetic listing. --Kouji San 19:43, 27 April 2011 (UTC)

ConfirmEdit Installed

So good news. I emailed Cory, and looks like they installed ConfirmEdit. This will cut down on bot spam. However, this messes up the color scheme (the box is grey on white when asking for the math problem). I'll see what I can do to fix that. Quovatis 20:15, 9 May 2011 (UTC)

Ok, looks like I fixed the color problem. There may be other instances where there is a color problem (I only check new user account creation pages). If you run across another problem, let me know. Quovatis 20:39, 9 May 2011 (UTC)
I also finally fixed the footer color so you can actually read the text at the bottom now. Unrelated to ConfirmEdit, but it's an overdue fix. Quovatis 20:54, 9 May 2011 (UTC)
HURRAH!!! :D Now just need an upgrade to 1.16... >.< I should install a local copy of 1.16 and get to work styling the Vector skin so if/when it's upgraded we can just go SHAZAM! and be done with it :) Daworm 04:43, 10 May 2011 (UTC)

Well, obviously ConfirmEdit didn't help at all. This is because it's stuck in the default setting with plain-text math questions that are quite easily scripted. I'll try to get them to change it to fancyCaptcha, which is much harder to get around, but that will likely take a while. Our spammer obviously already accounted for the basic ConfirmEdit implementation. Quovatis 15:39, 10 May 2011 (UTC)

ConfirmEdit is a knee-jerk reaction to spammers tbh... especially since we're sitting on v 1.13 of MW installation. Upgrading to 1.16 and spamBlacklist added will help a LOT more. Honestly, the wiki upgrade will need 10-15 minutes of their time... :( Daworm 23:09, 11 May 2011 (UTC)
Well, we're fortunate to get any action. Please check your forum PM box Daworm. Quovatis 14:09, 12 May 2011 (UTC)

SpamBlackList Installed

Charlie was nice enough to install the SpamBlackList extension, so hopefully that will take care of most of the spam. At least there are things admins can tweak now instead of just UWE. The mediawiki version was not changed, as it requires PHP version 5.2.3. Charlie said PHP 5.2.3 is not in the upgrade path for UWE at the moment, though he did update to version 5.1.6. So we'll have to wait a bit longer for a mediawiki upgrade. Quovatis 22:26, 23 May 2011 (UTC)

As of Aug 10, 2011, I have disabled all external site linking due to excessive spam. I'm tired of cleaning it up and there hasn't been a need for a legitimate new external site link in months. The URLs in the MediaWiki:Spam-whitelist will still be available to link. If you have a URL that you need to add, contact me on my talk page, or post in the talk page of the whitelist. Sorry for the inconvenience. When NS2 is closer to release, UWE will have more time to work on the wiki and can install better anti-spam software. Until that time, blocking external sites is the best way to prevent spam. Quovatis 17:30, 10 August 2011 (UTC)
